Abbeylara judicial review starts today

A judicial review to decide whether gardai should testify openly at the Abbeylara inquiry begins this morning at the High Court.

Members of the Emergency Response Unit have claimed that future operations could be compromised if certain individual members are identified.

John Rogers SC, for the ERU members, said he was concerned loopholes in the inquiry's terms of reference could jeopardise the lives of gardai.

The outcome of the judicial review may have serious implications for future Oireachtas inquiries on security matters.
