Orangemen parade peacefully south of the border

One of the few Orange Order parades to be staged in the Irish Republic each year was completed without incident today in Co Donegal.

Around 2,000 Orangemen from both sides of the border attended the event in the seaside resort of Rossnowlagh, a little more than 10 miles from the frontier with Northern Ireland.

The Gardai mounted a low-key operation during the march through the village, featuring their recently introduced mounted unit of officers for the first time in what a spokesman described as ‘‘more of a public relations exercise than crowd control.’’
