Probe launched into RUC cross-border shot
RUC officers fired a shot as they crossed the border today while chasing a driver across fields.
Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan has been called in to the investigate the incident, a police spokeswoman confirmed tonight.
The chase first started in Markethill, Co Armagh where the driver of a white Transit van was seen acting suspiciously.
Attempts were made to stop the vehicle, but it was driven off before being abandoned in the neighbouring Keady area.
The police spokeswoman said: ‘‘One person made off across fields, pursued by police. One officer discharged a firearm. No one was injured.
‘‘At this point it transpired the RUC officers had inadvertently crossed the border which is unmarked at that point.
‘‘A garda patrol detained one civilian and escorted the RUC officers back to their own jurisdiction.
‘‘The Ombudsman’s office has been informed and will investigate the incident.’’
