Eight gardai injured in two Dublin attacks

Eight gardai were injured in Co Dublin last night in two separate incidents in the early hours.

The most serious of the two occurred in the Mulhuddart area at 10pm last night, when a patrol car from Dunshauglin, Co Meath and two Garda vans gave chase to a car when it failed to stop.

It was followed and eventually stopped by the patrol car at a halting site, where a gang of nearly 30 set upon the gardai. Reinforcements were called in, with 29 units of the force turning up in an effort to calm the mob.

One of the Garda vans was set alight and burnt out and damage was caused to one of the patrol cars.

It is believed that members of the gang had attended a wedding earlier in the day.

The disturbances were quelled after a spokesperson from the Travelling community intervened.

Two people were arrested and taken into custody.

In a separate incident, two gardai were treated for injuries sustained after their patrol car was rammed by a stolen car in Coolock.

One person was arrested.
