Labour claims coalition rift over Europe
Labour leader Ruairi Quinn has described comments made by the Attorney General, Michael McDowell, on Europe as a critique of his own government.
Last night, Mr McDowell criticised moves towards a European superstate and said it was essential the Irish people form their own view of Europe, which the government must then stand behind.
Deputy Quinn said it is clear that there is now a huge rift over the issue within the coalition, with the Tanaiste, Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy and Mr McDowell lining up against the Taoiseach.
Referring to Mr Ahern, Deputy Quinn said he had lost control of the party over Europe, an issue upon which he accused the Taoiseach of having no view of his own.
