Attorney General adds to Nice Treaty controversy

The row within the cabinet over Europe has intensified following an outburst by Attorney General Michael McDowell.

The Government's chief legal advisor has added his voice to those ministers concerned about the further integration of Europe following Ireland's rejection of the Nice Treaty.

In a speech to the Institute of European Affairs, he admitted that Nice offers little self-interested good news for Irish voters.

Speaking in a personal capacity, he said Ireland should not be silenced because of a sense of gratitude or remain quiet because of our size.

He said it is essential for Irish people to form their own view of Europe, which the Government should then stand behind.

McDowell's comments follow similar sentiments from the Minister for Finance, Charlie McCreevy and Arts Minister, Sile de Valera.
