EU citizens 'frustrated' at Union workings - Ahern

The Taoiseach has warned a gathering of EU leaders that Ireland's rejection of the Nice Treaty may be symptomatic of a growing frustration among citizens at the way the Union conducts its business.

In a tough-talking speech in Gothenburg, Mr Ahern said there is a perceived lack of clarity, openness and responsiveness within EU institutions.

He added that there is an urgent need to focus on how to make the Union more meaningful and accountable to its citizens.

Referring to the recent referendum result, he said he was disappointed but that Ireland remains committed to enlargement.

There is no "quick fix solution", he said, asking other EU leaders for time to reflect on the No vote.
