Govt set for grilling on dual mandate ban u-turn

The Government's abandonment of the dual mandate ban is to be raised by the opposition politicians in the Dail this morning.

Last night, Environment Minister Noel Dempsey confirmed that the provision to bar TDs and Senators from also holding local council seats is to be dropped.

It is known that the four independent TDs supporting the Government were against the move, and the Government is thought to have been fearful of losing their backing on other issues.

Labour have already called for Minister Dempsey's resignation over the u-turn.
