Bishop accused of racism

The Bishop of Raphoe has been criticised for his intervention in the debate ahead of last week’s referendum on the Nice Treaty.

The Fine Gael MEP Joe McCartin said that by his contribution the bishop had become involved in a "racist" no campaign.

Mr McCartin also claims that the intervention was at the last minute when there was no possibility for a response.

The MEP says as a practising Catholic he was deeply offended.

He wants the bishop to re-enter the debate and state if he has read and understands the Nice Treaty and to explain why he voted against it.

Mr McCartin says later this week he will be part of a delegation meeting a Polish bishop to hear of the disappointment of the Church there over the Irish vote.

The MEP was speaking as the European Parliament prepares to debate the implications of last Friday’s result.
