Gardai have launched a massive search for a six strong gang who raided a fire arms dealer.

The gang of five men and one woman stole 110 fire arms and ammunition including double barreled shotguns.

The theft took place in Co Westmeath near Co Athlone.

The female gang member had booked into a Bed and Breakfast, which was also owned by the arms dealer, before the raid took place.

The five men, who were armed, entered Gerry Scully's premises and locked him, his wife and their two daughters inside before making off.

Gardai are investigating a possibility that the raid is connected to paramilitary activity.
