New renewable energy programme launched

Minister of State at the Department of Public Enterprise, Joe Jacob, has announced the largest-ever renewable electricity programme.

Speaking at the Irish Wind Energy Association's annual conference in Ennis, the Minister said the move will see the trebling of amounts of such energy.

180,000 homes should benefit from the scheme, which will prevent the emission of 1m tonnes of noxious gases into the atmosphere.

Up to £200m in private sector investment is also expected.
