Study shows deficiencies in youth services

The first major study of young people living in rural areas has highlighted major deficiencies in youth services around the country.

The study by the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service found many young people are suffering from isolation, manifested in depression and under-age drinking.

Ann O’Dwyer, the author of the report, said the findings show that if the problem is not tackled, there be more cases of suicide, increases in petty and major crime, and an eventual exodus by young people from rural areas.

The research, carried out in Co Kerry, calls for a major rethink of how services for young people are identified and delivered, and better support from Government for the youth organisations working in rural areas.
