Gardai win right to challenge inquiry
Lawyers for the 36 gardai involved in the Abbeylara siege have been granted the right to mount a High Court challenge to a Dail inquiry into the incident.
The gardai are challenging practically all powers of the Oireachteas Committee, including its power to compel witnesses, to establish facts and to resolve conflicts of facts.
The gardai have now begun a head-on challenge to the work of the cross-party committee of TDs and one senator.
The High Court has given the gardai leave to bring a judicial review challenging the Oireachteas Committee's work.
That work is now put on hold pending the outcome of the High Court challenge.
