Ahern 'not offended' by Cardinal's remarks

A spokesperson for the Government has insisted the Taoiseach is "absolutely not offended" by remarks made by Cardinal Archbishop Desmond Connell last night.

Speaking at a reception hosted by Bertie Ahern and his partner Celia Larkin, the Cardinal warned that important values are being lost without people noticing.

In an apparent reference to Mr Ahern's relationship with Ms Larkin, he said marriage and family are vital to the future of society.

The Government spokesman said that Bertie Ahern was "very pleased" with the reception and added that Mr Ahern "has a home and family he loves very much".
