Future to be decided of Government challenge

A decision is expected from the High Court today on whether a Limerick university lecturer can take proceedings against the Government, challenging its savings incentive scheme.

Denis Riordan said the scheme is unfair and unjust and describes it as an "invidious form of discrimination".

Mr Riordan said the new savings scheme will use up to £1bn of taxpayers money and the money would be better spent on badly needed health and education services.

He said his concern is that his taxes are being taken and used to make wealthy people even wealthier and that if a person could save £200 a month, they did not need the extra money being offered by the Government.

Under a 1999 High Court Order, Mr Riordan is required to have the permission of the High Court before he takes any proceedings against the Taoiseach, Tanaiste, Government or State.
