Plan to raise DART, Arrow fares criticised

Fine Gael has criticised proposals to raise train fares for users of the DART and Arrow services in order to discourage passengers from travelling by rail.

A confidential consultants report issued to the Minister for Public Enterprise recommends that fare prices should be increased to solve problems with poor capacity levels.

Fine Gael spokesman on public enterprise, Jim Higgins, called on Minister Mary O'Rourke to reject the plan.

He said people should be encouraged to use the public transport system.
