Northern Ireland risks sliding into a society marked by ‘‘gangsterism’’ unless the control that paramilitaries exert over neighbourhoods is tackled, Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble claimed today.

Mr Trimble issued the warning following the publication of the House of Commons’ Northern Ireland Select Committee report calling for the practice of paramilitary expulsions of people from communities to be stopped.
