SIPTU calls for Govt intervention in Guinness row

The Tanaiste and the Minister for Social Welfare are being asked to

intervene in the Guinness row.

SIPTU members attached to the joint union forum are appealing for Mary Harney and Dermot Ahern to facilitate talks.

All-out pickets will be placed at all Guinness plants in Ireland from next Thursday morning, unless there is a resolution.

The joint union at Guinness is asking the company to reverse its decision to close the Dundalk packaging plant.

They are also seeking assurances with regard to the future for other plants.

There is speculation that Guinness may import stout from England to meet demand here if the pumps run dry due to the dispute.
