Arrests follow gun attack

Police were today questioning a number of people following a gun attack in north Belfast.

No one was hurt when shots were fired at a house on Alliance Avenue, although the property was occupied at the time, police said.

The maroon Vauxhall cavalier used in the attack, which happened at 10.30pm, and was later found burning at Ballysillan playing fields, in a loyalist area in north Belfast.

Detectives believe three men were inside the car when the shooting was carried out.

‘‘A number of people were arrested in a follow-up operation,’’ said a RUC spokeswoman.

Meanwhile, petrol bombs were thrown into a Protestant estate in Derry last night amid continuing sectarian tensions in the city.

Eight firebombs were hurled from the nationalist Nailors Row into the Fountain at 10pm, the RUC said.

Two hit a house causing scorch damage to the front door but were extinguished by police.

One arrest was made for assault on police and other public order offences, an RUC spokeswoman said.
