Several hundred sheep are today being culled at farms in East Carlow and Co Laois.

The measures are being taken following the transfer of sheep from the North before the current restrictions came into place.

A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture says that there is no suggestion of any disease amongst the animals and their slaughter was purely precautionary measure.

Slaughtering is also continuing in Co Louth following this week’s outbreak of the disease on the Cooley Peninsula.
