Five RUC were injured and seven people arrested in St Patrick's night disturbances in Belfast's university area.

An RUC patrol came under attack in the early hours of this morning as they made an arrest outside licensed premises in University Street in the south of the city.

Police said that, as they tried to move the crowd away from the area, they were continuously pelted with stones and bottles.

At one stage, around 350 people took part in the rioting as they were driven back towards Rugby Road. Order was restored to the area at around 3am..
