The government has been called on to formally recognise and support the voluntary work done by Irish women.

The appeal comes as women across the country celebrate International Women's Day.

Mary O'Connell, of the Women's Domestic Violence Project, from Cork, said that while many women are happy to devote their time and energy as volunteers, their efforts need to be supported by the governing bodies.
