The death toll on the country's roads has risen further, with the latest victim a 65-year-old Co Clare pedestrian.

The elderly man died after being knocked down by a car on the Mountshannon to Whitegate Road in Clare last night.

He was taken to Limerick Regional hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Gardai are still investigating the cause of the accident and it is understood a post mortem will be carried out later today.
