Irish efforts to have the Sellafield nuclear processing plant shut down may receive a boost with the announcement that the EU is to issue new guidelines on the transportation of nuclear waste.

The government has repeatedly protested at shipments of toxic material to the Cumbrian plant through the Irish Sea. Leinster FF MEP Jim Fitzsimmons today called on the British government to carry out an environmental impact assessment on the consequences of any accident involving such vessels.
