Gardai are continuing their search this morning for a convicted robber who escaped from custody yesterday after threatening prison officers with a blood-filled syringe.

24-year-old Kevin Brassil made his escape as the private mini bus taking him from Dublin to Cork prison pulled into a filling station near Rathcoole, Co Dublin.

After asking to use the toilet, he held the syringe to one prison officer's neck and ordered the others to uncuff him before making off on foot.

Gardai assisted by the Garda helicopter and dog units are searching the area for Brassil, who was serving a 10-year sentence.
