Irish-painted Washington portrait fetches $1.2m

A portrait of America's first president, George Washington, by an Irish artist has been sold to an anonymous telephone bidder in New York for $1.2m.

The jewel-like, two-inch portrait was painted by Irish-born John Ramage on October 3, 1789, and placed in a locket as a gift for the president's wife, Martha.
