The Navy will mark the anniversary today of the sinking of an Argentine merchant ship in Irish waters more than 80 years ago.

An Irish gunship will sail to the spot 20 miles west of the Skelligs where the Neuquen was torpedoed and sunk in January 1917, at the height of the First World War.

A wreath will be laid, followed by a minute's silence by the crew of the LE Aisling in memory of those who lost their lives.

Navy Lieutenant Commander Hugh Tully said this morning the commemoration was in the spirit of the strong maritime links between Ireland and Argentina.
