Victim of steel plant fire named
The man who died in a fire at the Irish Ispat Steel Plant in Cork earlier today has been named as 53-year-old Thomas Mulcahy from Gardiner's Hill in Cork.
He died in hospital after being trapped in the laboratory where the fire started. Garda experts are investigating the scene.
There is also an investigation into why an on-site fire engine failed to get to the fire, which started shortly after 1am. Unconfirmed reports say the fire engine failed to start.
The company have refused to comment on the incident except to issue a statement offering condolences to the family of the dead man. They have also reminded all employees that work will continue as normal this evening.
This is the third accidental fatality at the plant in recent years.
