Adair will not be released

The Sentence Review Commission has decided not to release UDA leader Johnny Adair.

Adair was sent back to jail in August by the Northern Secretary, Peter Mandelson, for breaking the terms of his early release.

It is expected the decision will be challenged by Johnny "Mad Dog" Adair.

The most senior RUC officers have testified that he was involved in paramilitary activity and drug dealing during the time he was at liberty.

Adair's lawyers and associates said he supported the peace process and had no direct involvement in planning or carrying out violent acts this summer before he was sent back to jail.

Violent street protests are now expected.
