Tragic Monaghan skaters are buried

The two young cousins, who drowned after falling through ice on Lake Hollywood in County Monaghan, were buried in the same grave. 12-year old Louise McAloon and 10-year old Veronica McAloon were found in 10 feet of water on New Year’s Day after a 24-hour search.

Hundreds of mourners packed into Saint Mary’s Church near Scotstown in north Monaghan to pay their last respects to the two young cousins. There were guards of honour from both of their schools and President Mary McAleese was represented by her Aide-de-Camp. In his homily, Father Martin Traynor described the girls as best friends whose love of nature was a common bond which had brought them many happy hours playing together at the same lake where they so tragically died.
