A young man, who when he was nine years old made heroic efforts to help his friend after he was engulfed by a fireball, has settled for €60,000 his High Court action over injuries he suffered.

Caleb O’Brien was with friends making a camp in a wood near his Wexford home when his friend, Kurt O Callaghan decided to put up a Keep Out sign and hammered a nail into an ESB pole.

Kurt hit a cable when he hammered in the nail and was thrown back and consumed by a fireball. He suffered severe injuries and last year the 17-year-old, who is also from Wexford town, settled his High Court action against the ESB for €700,000.
