Man assaulted outside pub dies in hospital

A 65-year-old man who was assaulted outside a pub in Kanturk, north Cork, has died.

The man, from Banteer, suffered serious injuries after he was assaulted by another man in the early hours of October 24.

He is understood to have been struck over the head before falling back and hitting his head off the pavement.

Emergency services were called to the scene and he was rushed to Cork University Hospital.

While he was initially expected to make a recovery, his condition deteriorated in the past few days and he died in hospital yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí have requested that an autopsy be carried out on the deceased man and this is due to take place in the coming days.

Following the assault, gardaí from Kanturk attended the scene and Garda technical experts carried out a forensic examination.

It is understood that a number of eye-witnesses were spoken to after the assault and CCTV footage has also been examined.
