Hundreds of men lost up to two stone in weight and reduced the size of their waists by up to eight inches as a result of taking regular exercise, a new study has revealed.

Preliminary findings from HSE-funded research among more than 900 men around Ireland also showed their risk of heart disease dropped by up to 30%.

The results of the study into the impact of regular group-based exercise on previously inactive men have been so encouraging the HSE has been urged to consider upscaling the programme on a national basis to include thousands of other men.
