€120,000 of ecstasy seized in Mitchelstown

A huge seizure of ecstasy tablets in North Cork follows a joint operation by gardaí and customs officers.

The tablets, with a street value of €120,000, were seized at a property in Mitchelstown, at Captain Keane’s Grove, last Thursday.

Garda sources said some of the tablets might have been destined for sale at the Indiependence music festival, which will attract thousands of people to the town between July 29 and August 1.

The remainder were probably for supply in South Limerick and in Cork.

“Ecstasy tablets are definitely on the way back,” said a Garda source. They had become rare, due to fear of contaminated tablets that had caused a number of deaths around Europe.

In a follow-up search, gardaí from Fermoy raided another house in Mitchelstown.

They discovered a small amount of cannabis herb and cocaine, along with associated drug paraphernalia, at the house at Liam Lynch Park.

An Irish woman in her 20s, who is understood to be from the Mitchelstown area, was subsequently arrested in connection with the seizures.

She was taken to Mitchelstown Garda Station, where she was questioned for a number of hours by detectives.

The woman was subsequently released from custody and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
