IRELAND

A retired High Court judge who got a €250,000 lump sum payment on retirement two years ago, plus €78,000 pension annually, following 12 years on a judicial salary ranging from  €165,000 to €240,000,  has said his income is not “adequate” to meet the needs of himself and his family.

Family friends of a little girl from Wicklow who has been struck down with a rare illness have set up  a fund to help with her family's living expenses.

Former chairman of the Labour Court Kevin Duffy has been appointed as the new chairman of the expert water charges commission.  Minister Simon Coveney made the appointment this afternoon, after the resignation earlier this week of Joe O’Toole, who stepped down from the post after calls for him to go.

Housing Minister Simon Coveney has admitted a Fine Gael leadership race is likely "in the not too distant future",  despite insisting the issue should not distract Government from existing work,  writes Irish Examiner political reporter Fiachra Ó Cionnaith.

A Dublin Airport taxi driver has been fined €250 after he was found guilty of failing to take an accountant on the shortest route to his home in Blackrock.  Barry Burns, aged 42, of Bath Rd, Balbriggan, Co Dublin. had contested a taxi regulation charge of not driving as directed by his passenger.

The Dáil has heard claims that County Kerry is being denied investment - because of a problem with snails.  Danny Healy-Rae has said the so-called 'Kerry snail' is the reason why the main N22 between Tralee to Cork City has not been completed.

WORLD

Former celebrity publicist Max Clifford has been cleared of indecently assaulting a teenage girl.  The 73-year-old, already serving a jail term for historic sex offences against young women, showed little emotion as the jury foreman returned the verdict at London's Southwark Crown Court.

The battle for UK prime minister has been whittled down to two female candidates  as Michael Gove (pictured) is eliminated from the contest.

SPORT

John Caulfield has no intention of simply defending Cork City’s away-goal advantage  in tonight’s Europa League first round second leg clash against Linfield.

Fionnuala McCormack made no attempt to hide her frustration with the rules after finishing fourth in the 10,000m at the European athletic championships.  McCormack (née Britton) also finished in the same position in the event at the last European Championships in Helsinki four years ago.

Wales fans will get the chance to welcome home Chris Coleman's Euro 2016 squad  with a special event in Cardiff on Friday, which will include an open-top bus parade and a performance by Manic Street Preachers.

RTÉ and TV3 will both broadcast the European Championship final on Sunday night  so Irish viewers can choose which panel they want to watch for the tournament finale.

BUSINESS

Some 95% of Irish hoteliers are concerned about the impact Brexit will have on their business.  The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), is calling on the Government to set up a working group to examine the impact that Brexit could have on the tourism sector here.

Kind of.  The app initially launched in New Zealand and Australia yesterday and has since been officially revealed in Japan and the US. For everyone else, there's a bit more of a wait involved - unless you're on Android and don't mind some minor hacking.

MOVIES/TV: As you may have heard, the one and only Bryan Cranston is set to play Zordon in a major new Power Rangers movie,  and he's got some info to share on the film.

TECH: Germany’s soccer playing robots are just as dangerous in penalty shootouts  as their human counterparts. A team from the University of Bremen beat a team from the University of Texas in a penalty shootout to win Robocup 2016.

SHOWBIZ

RTÉ have appealed for couples to take part in a new show.  The RTÉ2 show will feature three couples, as they take part in the ultimate relationship bootcamp in the surrounds of a luxury retreat.
