A trial date has been set in relation to the murder of a 36-year-old man believed to have been stabbed in a Phibsboro flat.

Stefan Neanu (36), originally from Romania, was attacked in a small flat on the Phibsboro Road on Dublin's northside in April 2015.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed in favour of criminal proceedings, Detective Inspector Francis Sweeney of Mountjoy Garda Station told an inquest into Mr Neanu's death at Dublin Coroner’s Court.

“The trial date has been set relating to the murder itself for January 16 2017,” Det Insp Sweeney told the court.

The flat where Mr Neanu was attacked was preserved as a crime scene following the incident. The flat is a short distance from where he lived with members of his family.

Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane adjourned the inquest until after criminal proceedings have been completed.
