A Tralee man who grew cannabis in Mayo could find no place to stay on a journey to Mallow so he called to the local Garda station looking to stay there — with a bag of homegrown cannabis in his hand.

Shane O’Connor, aged 42, of Attymass, Ballina, pleaded guilty to the charge of having cannabis in his possession for sale or supply at Mallow Garda Station on July 31 last.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin said at Cork Circuit Criminal Court that the circumstances of this case were highly unusual and somewhat bizarre. He said a one-year suspended sentence was appropriate.
