Emergency departments to bring in first of its kind triage system to better treat children

A new children’s triage system, the first of its kind, is to be introduced in emergency departments in the coming months.

The clinical lead on the project, Gerry McCarthy, confirmed that the new system would be introduced after a highly successful pilot project which showed it enhanced the level of care provided to children attending emergency departments.

The provision of the system had been delayed because some IT systems in some of the hospitals could not cater for it, but this has now been addressed.
