Minister to receive report on garda death

A report into the investigation of the suicide of a garda sergeant is expected to be with the new justice minister this month.

Minister to receive report on garda death

Mr Justice Frank Clarke completed his inquiries several weeks ago and is concluding a report that is expected to make recommendations about investigative procedures.

In June last year, Mr Justice Clarke opened a probe into the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) investigators who had interviewed Sergeant Mick Galvin about a traffic accident in January 2015.

The officer took his own life at Ballyshannon Garda Station in May last.

The 48-year-old father of three did not know he had been cleared of wrongdoing by a GSOC investigation.

The Department of Justice said yesterday that Mr Justice Clarke is in the process of writing his report:

“It is not known at this stage when the report will be made to the minister.”
