A Cork woman has given a first-hand account of being tear-gassed at the Calais migrant camp, and has criticised French authorities for the manner in which they attempted to clear the site this week.

Care4Calais volunteer Clodagh Whelan returned home on Tuesday having spent a week at the camp.

“The camp is peaceful, in the month I was in Calais I never felt unsafe, in fact I was moved by the dignity of people living in such awful conditions,” Ms Whelan said yesterday.
