A man on his way to buy a half sliced-pan for his friend ended up assaulting another man by banging a closed beer can repeatedly on to his head.

Michael Hegarty, aged 36, who lives at an apartment at Glenview House, Redemption Rd, Cork, denied a charge of assault causing harm to Philip Sheehy near Shandon St, Cork, at 8.15pm on February 8, 2015.

Judge Olann Kelleher convicted him of the offence at the end of a trial at Cork District Court yesterday and sentenced him to four months in jail.
