Labour will spend three times as much public money on public services than on tax cuts if returned to Government, Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin has said.

The party’s commitment, to be included in its manifesto, is contrary to pledges made by coalition partner Fine Gael, which is focusing its election campaign on tax cuts.

In an interview with the Irish Examiner, Mr Howlin said the position of a 75:25 split between spending and tax cuts would be an “extremely important position” in any potential negotiations on a programme for Government for Labour.
