Defence Forces assist as Westmeath on flood alert

Westmeath County Council has requested assistance from the Defence Forces and the Civil Defence to protect properties in the worst affected areas. The Defence Forces were expected to be on the ground by yesterday evening.

Using data from the ESB, the council has forecast a rise in levels for the next four days. By Saturday, it is feared the water could reach November 2009 flooding levels when over 100 properties were flooded. A Flood Emergency Response Plan was activated by the council on Monday and meetings are taking place daily. At Tuesday’s meeting it was agreed to prioritise assistance for people trying to protect their homes and to provide transport and alternative accommodation, if required.
