A risk register operated by the State railway company shows the crossing at Killnageer on the line between Manulla Junction and Westport has the highest risk rating of 978 level crossings that have been subject to a safety assessment.

An analysis of the Irish Rail risk register, which has been obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, shows the railway line between Manulla Junction and Ballina, Co Mayo, has the highest concentration of dangerous crossings. Nine of the 50 crossings with the highest risk rating are found along the 23km-stretch of single track that connects Ballina with the Westport-Dublin line.
