Gardaí are appealing for information after yesterday's tiger kidnapping in west Dublin. During the raid a mother and daughter were held hostage in a van, while a male family member was forced to hand over money.

Motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads this morning, following heavy rain last evening. The Road Safety Authority has said poor conditions can be expected this weekend and it is urging drivers to allow extra time for all journeys.

Fears are growing for a teenage girl from Tipperary who has not been seen in several days. 18-year-old Sophie Burke disappeared after she left her house at Elm Park in Clonmel on Wednesday.

More than 3,500 public patients are waiting over three months for a test to detect bowel cancer which private patients can access within 12 days.

An ex-fiancee of Charlie Sheen is suing the actor claiming he did not disclose he was HIV positive until after they had sex several times. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court by Scottine Ross, states she and Sheen, 50, had sex five times before she learned he was HIV positive.

Gary Neville was presented as the new Valencia boss on Thursday, before admitting he would have questioned the appointment of an untested manager to such a big job. The 40-year-old England coach will take his first venture into football management with the Primera Division giants after signing a six-month deal.

BUSINESS

A 747 jumbo jet will be adapted for use as a launchpad for a Virgin Galactic spaceship, Richard Branson has announced. The plane, which was nicknamed Cosmic Girl when it flew under the Virgin Atlantic brand, will be used to carry the firm’s Launcher One satellite to high altitude before the craft will blast into space.

One sale of a €250,000 pink diamond necklace and earrings set by jewellers Fields last year provided a boost to its Irish revenues and profits. The sale was the largest item sold in the company’s 14 Irish stores.
