Pups lucky to be alive after being dumped

Nine husky pups are lucky to be alive after being dumped on a rubbish pile at woodland in Co Laois.

The puppies were found by a couple out walking their dog at Garryhinch Woods at around 2pm on Sunday. They contacted Laois-based voluntary animal charity Cara Rescue Dogs.

A spokeswoman for Cara Rescue Dogs said the puppies had been left in a bag on a “rubbish pile” just inside the gates to the woodland.

“They were very cold, they were screaming something awful when they got here,” she said.

“They were born within 24 hours of when they were brought into our care which was at 3.30 yesterday,” she said. Despite the cold wet weather, all nine puppies were alive.

The puppies were syringe- fed and cared for by the team at Cara Rescue Dogs. Laois SPCA has now taken four of the dogs and the other five have been fostered.

Volunteers are concerned for the wellbeing of the puppies’ mother.

“Mastitis is the first and foremost (concern), because she is not feeding the puppies she is full of milk,” the spokeswoman said. She also expressed concern over the dog’s emotional state.

Cara Rescue Dogs said the incident was “barbaric” and appealed to anyone with information to contact the rescue centre or gardaí.
