A mother wept yesterday as a jury returned a verdict of accidental death in an inquest into the death of her only child in a road crash in West Cork.

The inquest into Zoe Scannell’s death near Rosscarbery in 2014 also heard she was sitting on her mother Alisha’s lap in the back seat of a car, sharing a seatbelt, when their car was hit by an out-of-control car driven by an unaccompanied teenage learner driver.

The driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and received a two-year suspended jail sentence earlier this year.
