The girlfriend of an Irishman shot in the horror that unfolded in Paris last Friday night has said they were “beyond lucky” to have survived the scene of the massacre in the Bataclan concert venue where 89 others died.

Katie Healy, who lives in Cork, wept as she described how boyfriend David Nolan, 32, from Millstreet, had thrown himself on top of her twice in an effort to protect her from Islamist State militants who opened fire indiscriminately on concert-goers.

She had been standing by a doorway in the Bataclan when the gunmen entered and she felt a “splash on her shoulder”. “I turned to David, thinking someone had spilled a drink,” she said. In retrospect, it was the blood of a victim as the sound of automatic gunfire rang out around the venue.
