UCC law event to explore gender equality in the home

Article 41.2 of the Irish constitution declares that the State recognises the mother’s position within the home and “therefore endeavours to ensure that mothers shall not be obliged by economic necessity to engage in labour to the neglect of their duties in the home.”

UCC law event to explore gender equality in the home

A student-run law conference at University College Cork next month enititled, “Article 41.2 – Does it Have a Place in Modern Ireland?” will probe whether that contention reflects contemporary Irish society.

Event organiser Lauren Foley is admant it does not and expressed the hope that the conference would spark a badly needed conversation about what she feels is ’something so fundamentally unequal in our own constitution.
