Revenue emails scam warning

The Revenue Commissioners is warning people to be wary of bogus emails or telephone calls purporting to come from Revenue.

The emails seek personal information from taxpayers in connection with a tax refund or seeking credit/debit card details and Revenue has advised taxpayers that these emails are bogus.

“The Revenue Commissioners never send emails requiring customers to send personal information via email or pop-up windows,” it said.

Anyone who receives an email purporting to be from Revenue and suspects it to be fraudulent should simply delete it, while anyone who is awaiting a tax refund should contact their local Revenue Office to check its status.

People who provided personal information in response to these fraudulent emails should contact their bank or credit card company immediately.

Revenue has also become aware of a number of individuals who received phonecalls from a man purporting to work in Revenue, demanding the immediate payment of a tax bill over the phone.

Although it is believed no-one has been taken in by this scam, Revenue has advised those with doubts to contact their local Revenue office.
